Book 4

The Fourth World War was a non-nuclear conflict that is depicted (albeit differently) in both the Appleseed[1] and Ghost in the Shell Timelines following a World War III. Because of the nuclear winter from World War III and the fact that almost no nukes existed at this point, World War IV was entirely conventional.

Background[]

Following a devastating World War pitting the United States and Europe against Russia (Soviet Union in pre-1989 source materials), There was extensive damage all over the northern hemisphere. However, East Asia (namely China, Korea, and Japan) were mostly untouched and fairly wealthy. This caused friction between the European Union (European Community in older materials) and the Asian states. The situation continued to snowball until 1999, when a Euro-American Alliance declared war with Asia, leading to World War IV.[2]

The War[]

In 1999, a large meteor hits China, destroying Beijing. The sudden loss of the central government forces China to democratize and later, in the year 2000, severe food shortages force all Asian nations to work together.[3] Two years later, Japan finishes the creation of its Japanese miracle radiation scrubber robots, though they aren't used until 2015. Meanwhile, forced to using conventional weapons, the Euro-American Alliance quickly finds itself bogged down in Asia. As the War drags on, an Asian Alliance is formed by the numerous Asian countries, vowing to learn from Europe.[4] In 2024 England drops out of the conflict completely, and by 2026, the war itself ends, with the Asian Alliance victorious.

Notes and References[]

  1. The movie Ex Machina alludes to a catastrophic, unnamed world conflict that occurs in 2133, two years after the first CGI movie. Whether or not this is director Shinki Arakami's interpretation of World War IV is unclear, but a possibility.
